Previous crime at farm death scene
28 November 2011The property where Feilding farmer Scott Guy was gunned down has previously been the scene of criminal activity, including an alleged arson and thefts
Mr Guy, 31, was found dead from gunshot wounds on a driveway near his Aorangi Rd house about 7am on Thursday
He is believed to have gone milking on his dairy farm when he was shot outside the house where he lived with son Hunter, 2, and wife Kylee, who is due to have their second child in September
But the shooting was not the first crime to have occurred on the property, which is owned by Mr Guy's family
Police spokeswoman Kim Perks confirmed that an old farmhouse that stood on the site of Mr Guy's house was destroyed in a suspicious fire on October 24, 2008
The farmhouse, which was due to be removed from the property, had been split into two pieces and was on trailers
Fire investigator Murray Kidd was reported as saying the fire was started between the trailers, either underneath or inside the farmhouse
The estimated cost of the damage was $1 million
Feilding detective Felicity Mansell said at the time that items had been stolen from the Aorangi Rd property in the two months before the fire
The arson is still under investigation. Mr Guy was not living at the property at the time of the fire
There was no indication the arson or thefts were linked to the shooting, but police would investigate all recent crime in the area, Mrs Perks said
Anecdotal talk about the area experiencing a spate of burglaries and being a route for boy racers had not yet been backed by evidence
Earlier this week, Aorangi Rd resident Devon Couchman told the Manawatu Standard she locked her doors after hearing a loud car racing down the street about 10.30pm on Wednesday
"It was doing laps around Aorangi Rd and Durie St and this is unusual as we don't see many people out here at that time of the night," she said
An email was circulated to residents in the area warning about a recent attempted burglary of a shed
Mrs Perks said vehicle activity on the road was being investigated
She could not confirm if a weapon or ammunition rounds had been found, or what type of weapon was used in the shooting
Mr Guy's death was referred to the coroner after autopsy results revealed he suffered gunshot wounds
A team of 20 detectives and forensic staff continued to search the scene for clues at the weekend, and area inquiries were conducted
Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger said she wanted to hear from anyone who had noticed suspicious behaviour in the area before Mr Guy's death
"We know the family and community have a lot of questions that police are not in a position to answer at this stage
"However, I want to give reassurance that police are doing everything possible to find out how and why Scott was killed."
A police cordon remains around the Aorangi Rd house. Mrs Guy is believed to be staying with Hunter at another Feilding house. Want to find out more about house sign?
